Great Century Restaurant - Yum Cha

Located opposite Bankstown Sports Club.

Yum Cha, the only one i've been to in many years.
For those that don't know, Yum Cha is.. well.. you sit at your table, you don't order food. Someone will bring a cart around and show you the dishes they got, and if you like the look of it they put it on your table.

This place gets packed, i mean, i'm suprised we ever gets seats, must be cause we're white.. sorta.
If you love prawns, this is the place for you. All the good dishes have prawns in em.

I give them a 8/10

The seafood is great, but they're other servings are lacking, they really do need more chicken/beef dishes.
A lot of the people serving our food couldn't speak english, which is really not helpful when deciding what food to eat.

Taste of Thai - Bankstown

Located Between Pub and Arab Bank, oppposite Thai Hutt

So this is a new one that just opened up, it also happens to be opposite a previous favourite of mine, the Thai Hutt.

From the overall experience i would rate this restaurant 4/10

I've highlighted "overall" because, hey, 4/10 isn't good, but that doesn't mean i wouldn't recommend it. I do recommend it, see below.

The Bad
  • Rickity/wobbily tables. I want to eat, not balance my plate or worry about my drink spilling all over the place.
  • Mains, arn't that great. When i had a rice noodle dish i compared it to being very similar to one of those jarred sauces, canton or maggi.
The Good
  • Service is very quick
  • The entrée's are EXCELLENT. These are the reason why i would recommend it to people.
So to begin with, in this restaurant entrées are ordered on single servings. For example, for chicken satay sticks, you order one, or i can order just 1 dim sim (chicken dim sims fyi).
Highlights
  • Chicken Dim Sims
  • Prawn thingos (Batterered prawns + sweet sauce) 10/10
  • Chicken Satay
Prices are fairly good, a little cheaper than Thai Hutt.

What we've been doing is getting entrées from Taste of Thai and getting our mains from Thai Hutt.

KFC! Bankstown/Milperra/Punchbowl

That's right KFC. Sometimes your in the mood for some greasy deep fried chicken.. and it doesn't come any greaser or more fried than KFC.

I've decided to review a bunch of KFCs because i never want to write another KFC review again.

Ok, so..

Bankstown KFC, sort of at the intersection between Chapel Rd & Canterbury Road.
This KFC gets a 3/10
They're service is just about the worst you'll ever get. I can look past the fact that they don't serve any bacon on any of their burgers but still charge you the same price.. but their service.. wow its bad.
Firstly, you go to the first window expecting to order, you'll get a crackling machine for about 3 minutes then someone will tell you to go to the last window, where you'll order.
Another example would be, if your wanted chicken, and you order something at anytime within an hour of closing time, unless they have it already cooked, your not going to get any.. they'll give you some excuse like "we're out of chicken" or "the fryer is broken" or they'll tell you straight out that they don't want to cook any more.
If you manage to get any chicken, its pretty below par, overcooked, stanky oil.. blah blah.

Airport KFC, its next to Bankstown Airport
This KFC gets a 0/10
They serve bacon! but that doesn't excuse the fact that this KFC is shite. The service is ok. But the chicken is always overcooked. It's like they cook everything in month old oil, the chicken is dark.. like poo brown dark. If wicked wings are your thing, do NOT under any circumstances go here. Firstly the chicken is overcook, secondly they somehow manage to break all the bones in the chicken wings. Instead of your chicken flesh being a nice white, it'll be a redish-brown colour. That's bad, presentation is just as important as taste.

Lastly is Punchbowl KFC, on Canterbury Road in punchbowl.
This KFC gets a 5/10
Its the better of the 3, they don't serve bacon unfortunately.. what.. i like bacon.. They're service is ok, but they do get very busy sometimes. Chicken is good, not great but good.
Not much to say, its an average KFC, much better than the other 2. If you have a choice go here.

I'm going to add one last KFC. Crossroads KFC, its pretty far, on the way to campbelltown, inside the Crossroads homemaker center complex. Chicken here is great, its like they constantly use clean oil. If you really want good KFC, you go here.

Gemelles Liverpool

79 Bathurst Street, LIVERPOOL NSW 2170 Phone: 02 9602 5294

Not really in or near Bankstown, but definately worth the trip. It's about 20-30 minutes from Bankstown.

The food here is the absolute best, in all my years, i've never come across a restaurant that serves better food than this place. It's Italian food, so you've got a fairly good selection of pastas, also veal/chicken etc. Your usual italian, no pizza though.. that's kinda strange now that i think of it.

Gemelles gets a rating 10/10 as well

Never had an entree before, normally we go for lunch so we're in there just for a main.

The best meal you will ever have is the Filetto al Funghi, aka Steak with mushrooms and creamy sauce with Kipfler potatoes (yummy potatoes).

For the vegetarians Arrancini is great, not sure how to describe it.. sort of rice balls mixed with spinach and cheese with a cheese center and fried. It is really really nice.

I've tried a lot of things on the menu and nothing has been bad, so i recommend going there and giving it a try.

Thai Hutt Bankstown

13 Restwell Street, Bankstown NSW 2200 Phone: 9709 6005

In the heart of Bankstown there is a thai food restaurant known as, the Thai Hutt. It's fairly new, about a year or so old and from what i know, the only thai restaurant in Bankstown.

I rate this restaurant 10/10

The first time we went there, the service was pretty bad, we're talking 40 minute before our food got served. That was about 8 months ago.
Now, they've fixed up their service, its very speedy now. The food here is excellent, the best thai i've ever had.

Some noteworthy dishes.
Entree:
Satay Chicken - chicken skewer, peanut satay sauce. Yum! best entree ever.

Main:

Chilli Basil Noodle - same as a pad see ew, more chilli, more basil. Best noodle dish.
Red Duck Curry (with chicken instead of duck): It could be red curry with duck, but either way, its a red curry with vegies + lychees. The lychees make all the difference, this is a great dish. Any of the other curries, like yellow or green, are great too.

Prices are fairly good, bout $8-$9 for an entree, $15ish for mains. I've never had dessert, i'm always pretty full after the meal.

First Post

As always, i'll begin my first post with a description of the blog.

For the past year or so, i've noticed that i eat out a lot of with friends. Some restaurants are bad, some are great, some kinda average. As we try new things i'll be giving my opinion on the places we go.
